Onslow County Jail Roster

Onslow County Jail Roster is a public resource that allows you to check who is currently in custody at the local detention center. In the state of North Carolina, such records are considered open to the public. The site OnslowCourt.us helps quickly find publicly available information about current and recent inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the Detention Division of the Sheriff's Office, in person at the detention lobby, or by calling the non-emergency line. The roster is maintained by the Detention Division of the Onslow County Sheriff's Office; it is updated periodically throughout the day and posted on the county's website.

Search Current Inmates in Onslow Jail

There are several ways to find out if a specific person is in custody at the Onslow County detention center.

Online Search

  1. Visit OnslowCourt.us to find publicly available information about court records and custody.
  2. Visit the Detention Division page on the county's official website — there may be a link to the current inmate list or instructions on how to access it.
  3. If a list is posted on the page, use the search function in your browser (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F) to find the person's last name.

To start the search, you will need the person's full legal name (last name and first name). If the booking number is known, it will significantly speed up the process.

By Phone

Call the Onslow County Sheriff's Office. The non-emergency line operator can confirm whether a specific person is in custody.

Find Onslow Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is a record created when a person is admitted to the detention center. It records the moment when the detained person goes through the registration process: fingerprints are taken, a photo is taken, and personal data is entered into the system.

Each such record usually contains:

  • Booking number — a unique identifier
  • Date and time of arrest and registration
  • List of charges
  • Name of the arresting agency (Sheriff's Office, Jacksonville PD, etc.)
  • Bail amount, if set

Where to find these records online? The Detention Division of the Sheriff's Office publishes the current roster on its website. If a more detailed record or a copy of the document is needed, you can submit a request through the Onslow County public records portal. The county adheres to the North Carolina Public Records Law, so most arrest and booking records are open for request.

To search for a criminal history at the state level — for example, if the person has already been transferred to the correctional system — use the Offender Search of the NC Department of Adult Correction. This tool shows information about individuals serving sentences in state prisons, on probation, or parole.

Search the Onslow Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The inmate roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in Latin script. If possible, add the first name to narrow the results. A few tips:

  • Check the spelling — one incorrect letter can lead to an empty result.
  • Try entering only the first few letters of the last name if the system supports partial search.
  • If the last name is common (e.g., Smith or Johnson), the list may be too long without a first name.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate way to find a specific record. It is usually provided at the time of arrest or during the first contact with the detention center. One number — one record, no duplicates.

If the Search Yields No Results

An empty result does not necessarily mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  1. Registration is not yet complete — there may be a few hours between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the system.
  2. The person has already been released — after release, the record disappears from the current roster.
  3. Error in the spelling of the name or last name.
  4. The person is held by another agency (e.g., federal authorities or Camp Lejeune police).

In such cases, call the detention center directly at 910-455-3113. The operator can manually verify the information.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Onslow

The inmate roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but it does not happen in real-time. There may be a few minutes to several hours between the time a person is actually brought to the detention center and the time their name appears in the online list — depending on staff workload and time of day.

Main limitations to consider:

  • Publication delay. Night or weekend arrests may only appear in the system the next business morning.
  • Disappearance of records after release. The roster shows only those currently in custody. As soon as a person is released on bail, by court decision, or after serving their term — the record is deleted.
  • Not an archive. Past bookings cannot be found through the current roster. To obtain historical records, submit a request through the public records portal or contact the state court portal for criminal case searches.
  • Minors. Records of individuals under 18 are not included in the public roster according to state law.

If you need a criminal history check, use the free computers in the courthouse or the eCourts online portal. These resources provide a broader overview than the detention roster and include information on completed cases, sentences, and case status.
